Racha El-Dib joined the Gems for Gems ambassador program in September 2018, just months after tragically losing her sister, Nadia, as a result of a devasting act of domestic violence. Nadia was killed on March 25th, 2018, by an ex-boyfriend who refused to let her go. Ever since her sister’s death, Racha has vowed to ensure Nadia doesn’t become just another statistic by helping as many women as she can.
Next month will herald the one year anniversary of Nadia’s death and will also mark a year of the El-Dib family’s tireless mission to save others from suffering the same fate. Sadly, in the two weeks after leaving an abusive relationship, a woman is seventy times more likely to be killed than while actively in the relationship. Racha and her family aim to draw attention to this fact, highlighting the dangers women face when trying to break the cycle of domestic abuse.
Since meeting Jordan Guildford, Founder and CEO of Gems For Gems, Racha has become an integral part of the Gems family; actively raising awareness through social media, interviews, videos, and podcasts. Racha has generously volunteered her time and support to the charity’s public Zero to Hero event series, Christmas jewelry drive, and many public fundraising events. In the fall of 2018, the El-Dib family spearheaded a successful partnership with thirty-seven Shoppers Drug Mart locations in Calgary to help raise awareness about domestic abuse and to collect donations for the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter. The blog titled Nadia’s Hope, created by Racha, has furthered the El-Dibs’ efforts in educating the public on the dangers of the domestic abuse epidemic.
It is an honour and a privilege to name Racha El-Dib as our first ever Gem of the Month for her inspirational and persistent contributions to the fight against domestic abuse. It is clear the first scholarship, which will be presented this year in honour of Nadia, will be life-changing for the selected woman but we know, with the support of incredible individuals like Racha, Gems will succeed in changing the lives of many, many more.
“It has been a difficult journey, but joining Gems for Gems has given hope to my family and I. Knowing we will help stop the cycle of abuse means the world to us.” Racha El-Dib
